A pit fall trap consists of a small container, sunk to its rim in the ground. It is then filled to a couple of centimetres with preservative, for instance 70% alcohol, together with a drop of detergent to prevent small creatures escaping. Left for several hours, it will trap many ground-living animals such as beetles and ants.
